Nancy Jo is a freelance writer, a staff writer for Woman Hunter magazine and the Guru Huntress columnist for The Women’s Outdoor News. She is an avid huntress who enjoys hunting both small and large game and has successfully taken her quarry with rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun and compound bow. She also enjoys sporting clays and shoots in 3-D competitions. Turkey hunting remains her favorite, but Nancy Jo concedes that deer hunting runs a close second.
She is an advocate for women hunters and enjoys researching and field testing products that are woman friendly and bringing that information to women hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. Nancy Jo’s work as a NALA-certified paralegal has instilled in her the skills essential to feed her inquisitive nature and research products of interest.
Nancy Jo credits her love for hunting to her husband and mentor, Richard, and believes that, if not for his unselfishness in sharing his love for the sport with her, she would never have had the awe-inspiring opportunity to have hunted in nine states in only three short years of hunting. Although they spend a majority of their hunting time together, Nancy Jo has ventured to other states on her own and feels confident that this was possible because of the skills instilled in her through Richard’s mentoring and the information she has gained through her research.

I absolutely LOVE that photo of you with the turkey, Nancy Jo. I hope I’ll have a photo of my own like that one of these turkey seasons!

Congratulations and I love the picture – Good eating too! I like to take cabbage leaves and hold them on with toothpicks over the skinned bird. Then put sliced onion and carrots in the cavity, season, chicken bullion and wine. Roast slowly and enjoy!

Thank you. It never ceases to amaze me at all the colors that are on these birds. So many people say they are “ugly”–I think they are one of the most amazing creatures. I still remember the when I roosted my very first Tom. I actually left tears in my eyes and it sent chills up my spine from the experience I was so amazed at all the colors and the whole courtship act…it was like a nothing I had ever experienced. I will have to share that story with those who haven’t read it.
Paige–and you will–I can’t wait to see your harvest photo. Best of luck.

Hi Nancy Jo, and welcome to The WOMA! The colors in a turkey’s feathers are amazing all right. If you’re a fly tier, one bird provides what seems a lifetime supply of feathers, for many different fly patterns.

Turkey hunting is one of those experiences you just can’t fully explain/describe to someone who hasn’t had the opportunity to take part first-hand. Talking to those big ol longbeards into coming within range will definitely get your heart beating!

Nancy Jo, for the short time you have been hunting….you are truely amazing on your knowledge and ability. You certainly are a GREAT roll model for females out there that has never hunted and can start from a great mentor.

Thank you Pat! I have been blessed with good mentors, great hunting friends and a patient husband; however cursed with an inquisitive nature! I am thankful for the many hours spent in total peace in the woods, on stand or in a blind.
I have certainly enjoyed our adventures over the last year and look forward to many more. All things in life happen for a reason and you can rest assure, my friend, that our paths did not accidentally cross. Thank you for your support and all that you do and for just being YOU! (and Orville ain’t too bad either!)
