Chris Quam takes 2nd in 5th Annual Rawlins Steel Match, Wyoming

August 30, 2010 by Christine Quam

On August 28 and 29 I shot the Rawlins Steel Match in Wyoming. I shot the match last year for the first time, and our group from Colorado that drives up together decided to make it an annual road trip.

They have 12 stages with a minimum of 230 rounds required. Of course we all load at least 350+ rounds to bring along for the first day. The shoot had between 30 and 40 shooters this year. I placed second in the women’s division and had a somewhat “respectable” time among the open shooters.

Sunday consisted of the Shooter on Shooter, a double elimination match. Depending upon how far you advance in the shoot-off, another 300 rounds may be required.  I had my shining moments and advanced almost to the top before being knocked out.  More practice . . . less Wyoming wind . . .  and fewer excuses by me! Second round of eliminations I didn’t advance as far, but had great fun and was in the company of some great shooters!

Even the Squirrels Knew

August 27, 2010 by Amy Shaw

Call it animal instincts, or call it nuts (no pun intended), but on a recent Squirrel Safari to a pecan grove in Miami, Okla., the bushy-tailed creatures had to sense their demise with the very presence of all the Smith & Wesson handguns and Thompson Center rifles and shotguns carried by the various outdoor writers on this expedition. Baiting the Press

After reading a recent news story on Ted Nugent and his inappropriate hunting behaviors out in California,  I thought to myself, surely I don’t have to state the obvious.  But I couldn’t help myself.  I’m going to state the obvious.

As sportsmen and women who hunt and fish, we are exposed to the possibility of outcries of animal cruelty.  I think we’ve fought that battle many times in the last two decades and would not like to go through that again.  We are also liable for our actions, both to the ecosystem members upon which we intrude, but also to our fellow hunters who are impacted even peripherally by our actions.

Being who you want to be

August 24, 2010 by Melita Ellington

How often do you listen to the words of a song?  I mean really listen?  I keep my car radio tuned to the same station, 104.7 The Fish, which is a contemporary Christian station here in Atlanta.  I was listening to a song I had heard about a hundred times before, when the words really sank in.  “This is your life; are you who you want to be?”  The melody was awesome, as usual, and the voice was perfectly pitched.  But for once, the message was getting into my brain, kind of like those passages of scripture that you can read a hundred times, but all at once will jump out and smack you in the face: “This is your life; are you who you want to be?”  Wow.  Am I who I want to be?  Well, am I?  Let’s think about that for a minute.
