The WOMA shares member RSS feeds on Facebook and Twitter

February 4, 2011 by

If you think the website is the only place you can hear from our members, think again. Here at The WOMA, we have a number of very prolific members who regularly contribute outdoor news, reviews and stories on their own blogs. Since our mission is to focus on

“…increasing media coverage of women who are active in traditional outdoor sports, especially shooting, hunting, fishing and archery.”

we would be remiss if we didn’t include the contributions made by our various members outside the confines of this website.  We’ve chosen to do this in several ways:

  • Posting featured member RSS feeds in the sidebar of this website
  • Publishing all member RSS feeds on our Facebook page
  • Including all member RSS feeds in our Twitter stream

The Package Deal — journalistic etiquette demands paying the photographer

One of our WOMA members recently got in touch with me and told me a little story. It seems that this person went on a fishing trip with a well-known freelance writer in the outdoor industry. I’ll call the WOMA member Betty and I’ll call the writer Mona. From all accounts, it was a marvelous day on the water. When Mona caught a big bass, Betty took photos of her with it.

Move over, Saltwater Sportsman … here’s our “Fish Babe” for February. And as usual with the fine women anglers we feature, she’s fully clothed. It’s outdoor blogger Georgette Wood on her first-ever fly-fishing trip, guided by The WOMA member and fly fishing guide Katherine Browne on Colorado’s Gunnison River for kokanee. Here, before she releases it, Georgette shows off a male salmon. Good going, girls!

Stealing the Hunt

February 2, 2011 by

Pass on the success of the hunt.

I was very excited because a new lady hunter is about to be born.  I have been inquiring, trying to get a good story from her, and she has been hesitant to discuss much about the upcoming hunt.  I asked if she had gotten her tag yet and she said “No, not yet”.  I asked if she is excited.  She said “kinda”.  I thought I may be intimidating to her so I decided to go to her husband for the story.

I asked her husband if she is excited.  He said he thinks she is.  I asked if they had gone to shoot and sight in her rifle.  He said “No, not yet”.  I was still sensing some hesitation in this story. I pressed harder. I asked what he had planned for her hunt.  He said he might go here or he might go there.  Nothing definite. Then he uttered the words that I never thought I would hear and hope to NEVER hear again.  He said “Well, if she can’t then I’ll just shoot it for her.”  What?  He was going to steal her hunt!

Pass on the excitement of the hunt.

He said he would shoot it for her.  Thoughts raced through my mind.  Here we are, ladies of the outdoor and shooting world.  We have a passion inside us and we want to share it with others.  We have seen the statistics about lady hunters soar over the past couple of years.  Now I wonder “How accurate are those statistics?”  How many husbands are out there robbing their wives of their excitement of the first hunt, or all the hunts?  How many just want an extra tag to use for themselves?

Pass on the support to women hunters.

We have to stand up for our passion.  We can’t let someone take the new outdoors woman’s experience away from her.  Help other ladies not only uphold the laws  (in our state you are only allowed to fill your own tag).  Pass on the feeling of the hunt.  Pass on the excitement of the hunt.  Pass on the accomplishment of being a perfect shot.  We will continue to uphold and support women in the outdoors.
