Donna Hornsby – WOMA Member
The outdoors started calling Donna’s name at an early age when her parents perched her atop a friend’s horse. Whether family camping in the Rocky Mountains, a canoe trip down the Susquehanna River, sailing in the Gulf of Mexico, rock climbing in the Wichita Wildlife Refuge, or horseback riding at sunrise around Superstition Mountain, Donna knew the outdoor life was for her. When she was eight years old, she shot her first arrow and took her first canoe trip down the Ipswich River in Massachusetts. A former boyfriend introduced her to shooting over 35 years ago by placing an M1 Garand in her hand. She’s never looked back and now has her own collection of a variety of handguns, rifles and shotguns.
Today, Donna is an NRA life member and range safety officer working toward a variety of marksmanship goals. She discovered the true challenge of achieving the Rimfire Rifle Distinguished Expert rating. Her journey began in early 2013 using an Anschutz Sporter 54 bolt action rifle, imported by Savage in the 1960s. Today she is just eight targets shy of achieving this goal with a heavy barrel Remington 40-X single-shot bolt-action rifle. Donna is also active in her local ladies’ shooting group, frequently encouraging women new to shooting to join in the fun.
As the Content Development Coordinator at Cheaper Than Dirt!, Donna manages a small team of writers who create content for the The Shooter’s Log—Cheaper Than Dirt!’s blog, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube social media channels. It is both fun and challenging, and the best part is she gets to talk and write about everything from shooting sports to hunting to prepping for when the zombies take over. Donna says, “It just doesn’t get any better than this!”
