All I can say is WOW! The Women’s Outdoor Media Association BOD members Deb Ferns and Melita Ellington did an outstanding job with our booth at the Shot Show. We have been having a very successful week with meeting and greeting many of the folks that stopped by to chat and inquire about the WOMA mission of focusing on increasing media coverage of women who are active in traditional outdoor sports, especially shooting, hunting, fishing and archery. It has also been a great week for attracting new sponsors for the WOMA! If you are still at the show, drop by and see us! We are on the 3rd floor, just across from the Press Room, a great location.
GSSF Makes Shooting History!

I’m sitting here on Thursday in disbelief… Our biggest match of the year, the GLOCK Annual Shoot XVIII, is a couple of days away and we already have 719 pre-registered entries. Saturday would see us gain another couple of hundred entries to 947, and then on Sunday, we broke the 1000 entry mark. We finished the weekend with a record 1023 entries! I wear two different hats for this match in that I am the local host coordinator and I also work for GSSF, so you could say I have two jobs and I am a zombie after this match.
GSSF stands for the GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation and I am their only female Rangemaster. I have worked for them since 2005, a victim of downsizing in the computer world. I have been involved with running USPSA matches since the late 80′s (yes, I am pretty old – but it’s better than the alternative!). I have been a Chief Range Officer for USPSA since 1992, and I have done just about any job in a match, including taking out the garbage. My motto is to do ‘whatever it takes to get the match done,’ so for GSSF, I had the qualifications necessary for the job. I do love my job because I get to travel all over the country and run matches. I absolutely cannot imagine sitting in an office 5 days a week ever again.
This has been an outstanding year for the GSSF program. The intention of GSSF is to attract new shooters, even those never having fired a gun, to come out and try a match. The hope is that if they try our match, they will continue on to try other forms of shooting competitions, like USPSA, IDPA, NRA Action, SASS, Steel Challenge, etc, you fill in the blanks! We give away guns and cash as awards at our matches. For this match with it’s 1023 entries, we will give away approximately 41 guns at random and probably another 250 prizes of $50 at random. We also have performance awards where the top shooter in his or her division will get a gun. Our prize system is based on the number of entries into the match, so the sky’s the limit!
This match was special for it’s number of entries, but even more for the accomplishments of one young lady by the name of Wei Young. Shewon our first ever Ladies Only GSSF Match , the Palmetto Glock Girl Shootout, held earlier this year near Charleston, SC. Winning the match made Wei our first female MatchMeister. A MatchMeister is the champion of the entire match, shooting the match with the lowest stock Glock score. All our MatchMeisters get invited to a special match held annually where they compete against each other in a man on man (or woman) shootoff, where the top prize is $3000. This match, the Gunny Challenge VII, was held during the GLOCK Annual Shoot XVIII at my home range, South River Gun Club. We call it the ‘Gunny Challenge’ because it is named after none other than The Gunny, R. Lee Ermey, and he was present to officiate plus he brought along country artist, Travis Tritt. After the MatchMeisters finished, the Gunny and Travis Tritt shot it out for bragging rights, with the Gunny taking top honors.
Wei didn’t win the Gunny Challenge, but she did something far better: She bested a field of 401 entrants, men included, to take top honors in our Civilian Division for this match! To my knowledge, this is the first time a woman has ever won this division with so many entrants!

Palmetto Glock Girl Shootout a Resounding Success!

It’s only Saturday and already we have seen 90 entries in our first ever Ladies Only GSSF match! They came from all around the southeast to the small town of Reevesville, South Carolina to compete. Many of these women had never touched a gun or participated in any organized shooting event. Just the type of shooters that GSSF and Glock are looking for! GSSF was started 20 years ago for the purpose of introducing Glock owners to a small level of safe and fun competition with the hope that these shooters would continue to participate in not only GSSF, but other shooting competitions around the country.
The Palmetto Glock Girl Shootout is being hosted by Lisa Marie and Tommy Judy, local firearms instructors, at their home range: B.E.L.T. Training, LLC . The competition consists of 3 courses and takes approximately 100 rounds per division to shoot. You can sign up for multiple divisions and depending on the number of entries, prizes given are guns, cash and merchandise. For more information on GSSF, visit their website at www.gssfonline.com. Lisa Marie is already looking forward to next year, but you still have time to attend on Sunday, May 29th from 9am – 2pm!

Congratulations are in order for WOMA member Sara Ahrens for being accepted as one of the next 16 competitors on the History Channel’s hit show Top Shot! Sara was a previous “Group Goddess” at the ‘Babes with Bullets’ camp she attended in 2010. You must shoot the best group out of all your classmates at camp to win that title. Best of luck Sara! We are pulling for you.

I’m pretty lucky in most respects. You might say I have a ‘dream’ job working for Glock, specifically for the Glock Sport Shooting Foundation. It has allowed me to travel all over the country and more often than not, I add some days before the ‘working’ part of the trip to visit the surrounding area. Read more
