Remanufactured Vs. Reloaded?

What is the difference between remanufactured and reloaded ammo? Hmm, after 17 years of shooting, I never gave that question much thought until I was asked to write about it …

Let’s start with factory ammunition: As implied by the name, factory ammo is produced by an ammunition company. All the components are new and assembled within SAAMI specifications (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturer’s Institute). Factory ammo uses new brass casings and gunpowder which are all measured within industry standards.

Are you guilty of sharing T.M.I.?

December 10, 2009 by

If you use Twitter or Facebook, I know you’ve seen the occasional frequent updates that share way TOO MUCH INFORMATION. What do you think when you see those updates? Do you think, “Who cares?” or maybe “I can’t believe he/she would post that?” or do you just start ignoring, or maybe even unfollowing or hiding those posters?

Biznik_ThumbLindsay Berger, a member of Biznik, an online business network for entrepreneurs, wrote an article about the pitfalls of sharing T.M.I. with your online business associates. Check out her article before you share personal, boring or otherwise inappropriate updates with your Twitter followers or Facebook friends.

The Skype’s the limit

November 18, 2009 by

I grip the side of my kitchen counter as my daughter totes her laptop from living room to hallway to bathroom to show me her latest lip color. You read that right: I am watching her on my laptop computer screen, which is set up where I make my afternoon coffee, and she is giving me a live virtual tour of her dash to the cosmetic drawer. She lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, and I live in Huson, near Missoula, Montana, and we are in the same room. The sky’s the limit; we’re “Skyping.”

I think I must be the last person on Google earth to have experienced this cybermiracle, and as a result I can’t stop talking about it. Nothing like a recent convert to spread the good news everyone else has already heard.

Wow, what an easy way to convert media!

November 5, 2009 by

Lately, I’ve been working a lot with video. The biggest frustration I’ve found is how to get it from one format to another. I use Windows, so when somebody sends me a Quicktime file (.mov), I can’t edit it with Windows Movie Maker, which is what I use. I know there are all sorts of media conversion software programs available for download. Some are free. Some are cheap. Some are neither.

After a particularly frustrating experience with a video clip for a new website I’m working on, I finally found a solution to my conversion blues. Believe it or not, I found it on You Tube! At the time, I was looking for a way to convert a .mov file to .avi which is a format I can edit with Movie Maker. I ran across a video by ericleb01 that introduced me to media-convert.com, an online audio/video conversion site. Not only is it super easy to use, it’s online and there’s no software to download! All you do is enter the format of your media file (input) and the format you need (output). Media-convert.com uploads your media file, converts it and either displays a link to the converted file on the page so you can download it, or if you don’t want to wait, you can get the link e-mailed to you when the conversion is complete. Since it’s online, it doesn’t matter if you use Windows, Mac or Linux. As long as your file format is on their list, you can get it converted!

If  you ever have problems converting audio or video to different formats, I highly recommend this site. I also recommend ericleb01′s video on You Tube that does a great job of explaining how to use the site. I’ve used it on several occasions already and it’s always done the job. It also converts media files that are online. It even works in nine different languages!

Oh, and did I say it was FREE

Do you use Facebook to air your political views?

facebook_icon_300x223Don’t ask me why, but my thought processes tend to move when I do. I can come up with great ideas and solve the world’s problems (well, at least mine) from behind the wheel of a car. Today, this blog post evolved while I was behind the wheel of my riding lawnmower. I realize the topic isn’t exactly what you’d expect from a tech column, but cut me some slack on this one, OK? Read more

Tech Talk: Introducing Google Voice, another cool tool from Google

August 9, 2009 by

Several years ago, Jerrilyn Thomas, a colleague of mine and CEO of  Women Partner International, introduced me to Grand Central, an online application for managing phone calls from my website. In 2007, Google purchased Grand Central and it became a member of the Google family and was renamed Google Voice.

If you have a business at home as I do, you’ve probably noticed that you have a  limited number of choices for managing your phone calls. You can use your home phone number as a business number, put in another line just for business, or use your cellphone as your business contact number. With Google Voice, you have another option–a single telephone number that your clients (or prospective clients) can call, not only from their home, office or cell number, but if you put a call widget on your website, they can call you with a mouse-click.  You can set your Google Voice number to ring multiple phones or even send all your calls to voicemail. If your phone number changes or you move, your Google Voice number stays the same. All you have to do is change the number or numbers in your Google Voice account. The best thing about it is that none of the calls will cost the caller a penny.  If the call originates from inside the United States, it won’t cost you anything, either.

To learn more about how Google Voice works and the features that are available, visit http://voice.google.com (I really recommend watching the short video). You don’t have anything to lose, and all you need to get started is an invitation and a free Google account (which you can set up when you receive your invitation).

Are you worried about your boss or clients seeing your Facebook page?

facebook_icon_300x223Some people have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. I don’t, but it seems like just when I get used to the “new” interface, along comes another. I’ve even seen groups spring up on Facebook protesting the changes, and even threatening boycotts! Okay, so I’m not THAT concerned about my Facebook page. Sure, I get annoyed, but after being a Windows user for lots of years, I’ve learned to adapt. As for privacy, I just don’t post anything that I worry about anybody reading or seeing.

Recently, I’ve had the occasion to talk with several people who have read about the harm their personal Facebook pages can do to their professional reputations. Since I share my personal stuff on Facebook only with my Facebook friends and I keep my professional stuff on LinkedIn, that’s not a problem for me, but there are times when I do share professional links on Twitter (especially links to my tekkie chat podcast, Views from the Coop) that also show up on my Facebook page, since I use the Twitter gadget.  If my personal friends are interested in my professional links, that’s great, but if they’re not, then they don’t have to click. For me personally, having a separate personal and professional profile on Facebook just isn’t an issue. For those Facebook users out there who do need to be able to share selectively on Facebook, you can do that now without having to create a whole new Facebook account!

Facebook recently added an account option that allows users to selectively choose who gets to see what: The Facebook Publisher ToolComputerworld, among others, just blogged about the new feature, and it looks to me like it will greatly enhance the privacy of Facebook users. If you’re one of those users who is worried about your privacy, take some time to explore the new feature. Sure, it takes a little more effort on your part, but it sure seems a lot easier than maintaining separate Facebook accounts! If you need some help getting started, check out this blog post on The Next Web for some simple, clear-cut instructions.

Until next time, this has been another tekkie tidbit from The WOMA’s own tekkie chick ~ Paige Eissinger.

Blogging in a Man’s World

May 5, 2009 by

I recently read a blog post on TechRepublic by Head Blogs Editor Toni Bowers, about how women bloggers in technology are perceived by their readers. I was pretty disappointed to read that many readers of technology blogs could not care less about what a male technology blogger looks like, but they do pay attention to a female blogger’s looks. I love Kim Komando, but why does she have to be a good-looking blonde?

I started thinking that women in the outdoors media probably face the same prejudices. If we think we’re going to blog in a predominantly male field, then we at least need to be someone who is pleasant to look at. I beg your pardon! What’s that got to do with what we know?

Let me hear from you other female bloggers who dare share your expertise (and yes, I do mean expertise) in a testosterone-drenched field. What challenges do you face? What advice do you have for other female members of a primarily male-populated media field? Do you have any good stories to share? Do you just want to sound off? DO IT HERE!

Until next time, this is The WOMA’s own Tekkie Chik

To Blog or Not to Blog…

March 27, 2009 by

Are your e-mails long, detailed descriptions of events you attended or explanations about why you hold certain opinions? Do you send them to multiple recipients? Do you feel compelled to reply to every e-mail somebody sends you? Do you wish you could share your experiences, photos and opinions with even more people and get their feedback?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you are a perfect blogging candidate! If the writer inside you has been feeling stifled lately, you can unleash the beast in a blog.
