Susan Shea-Gerson – WOMA Member

Susan Shea-Gerson is equal parts writer, reader, shooter and budding archery enthusiast. She is presently working on her first book related to the firearms industry and has recently become involved with the NRA Women’s Leadership Forum after attending the Women’s Wilderness Escape at the beautiful Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. While attending Susan_Shea-Gerson_Shootingthe WWE Susan earned her bow hunter certification, and in addition to her keen interest in archery, she also discovered a love for shooting five-stand sporting clays. As a result, she now plans to complete both the NRA shotgun and rifle certification programs so that she may work as an instructor with her sons’ Boy Scout troops and perhaps one day as a Women’s Wilderness Escape instructor at the Whittington Center.

In the very near future, Susan plans to establish a blog chronicling her new adventures in archery and eventually her path to completing both her shotgun and rifle NRA Instructor Certification programs. She currently lives in southern Connecticut with her husband and two young sons.

Athena’s love of guns and shooting grew out of initial indifference. She grew up in the big city, and she regrets that guns/shooting activities were not a part of her life growing up. But little did she know that her first trip to the range as an adult would get her hooked. She learned to shoot for self defense purposes, but her competitive nature led her to practical shooting sports, and that’s when “a necessary skill” turned into a passion!

That passion led to a search for fun and feminine range gear, which was a frustrating endeavor. She decided to make it easier for other female shooters to find what they needed, and the idea for GunGoddess.com was born! It might be couched in pink and leopard print, but the goal is to make guns and shooting more accessible and acceptable to women, to make it more fun to be out there on the range, and to encourage more women to take up competitive shooting sports.

Athena is not an instructor or professional shooter, but she hopes that as just another woman who loves to shoot, and through contact with women on the GunGoddess Facebook page and other social media, just by being out there and doing it, enjoying it, and promoting it, that this can encourage other women to have the confidence to take those first steps too!

Athena can be contacted at: mailto:athena@gungoddess.com

When I married my husband I knew nothing about the outdoors beyond the golf course! Now I share his love of waterfowling and upland bird hunting. We own a small pheasant hunting lodge in South Dakota and hunt waterfowl in Illinois, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Saskatchwen. Another facet of our life is collecting artifacts related to waterfowling and fishing. I have three books published on hunting and fishing collectibles, Top of the Line Hunting Collectibles, Top of the Line Fishing Collectible and Fish & Fowl decoys of the Great Lakes. I am a contributing editor with Decoy Magazine. Lewes Delaware and also contribute to Adverture Outdoors Sports, The American Waterfowler and have been published in Midwest Outdoors. I started my writing career illustrating a fishing column in Midwest Outdoors for the late Bart Crabb in the 1970′s. Over the years I have hosted collecting segments on the Midwest Outdoors Television program. I also created and managed an online collectors magazine, www. edecoy.org.

I feel very strongly about preserving not only our right to hunt but also to document our rich hertitage of hunting and fishing. Unfortunately in most cases the men who created the tools of our sports have been common men. In many cases their families are gone and their histories have been forgotten. Most of my writings deleve into their stories which include the history of the major sporting areas. I like to think of myself as a sporting historian.
