A big thank-you to those WOMA members who helped at our booth at the recent SHOT Show held in Las Vegas for four long days. (The “backbone” of the booth was Melita Ellington, WOMA VP and Membership Team Leader, so a special THANK-YOU to her!) The response to The WOMA was beyond good; it was phenomenal to the point that it will take us awhile to catch up with dozens and dozens of new membership applications. Read more

Venison faux pho

November 20, 2010 by

My name is Julie and I am addicted to pho. I could eat it every day. For those of you who haven’t had it, pho is a Vietnamese rice noodle soup. There are lots of variations but my favorite is a beef broth version with shavings of sirloin. So, I know what you’re thinking. Beef noodle soup? She’s a beef noodle soup junkie? Ah, but there is so much more to it than that! Pho is to the Vietnamese like a secret marinara sauce is to an Italian family. Recipes are guarded and competition is fierce among pho restaurants.

Julie Goloski-Golob's faux pho with pronghorn

Living in northeastern Montana does not allow me to fulfill my pho cravings, unless of course I make it. Even then I don’t have all the necessary ingredients or time to make authentic pho. Still, I’ve been on a mission to make the best faux pho I can with what I happen to have quite a bit of—venison. This week I made my best bowl EVER with pronghorn steak! Here’s the recipe . . .

Broth:

In a large pot, add two 32-oz. cartons of 98% fat free beef broth. To give it that authentic flavor add four star anise “stars,” one inch of ginger root, sliced thinly and one packet of Gia Vi Nau Pho spice. You can find the spice at Amazon. A bit of advice on these packets—DO NOT OPEN. I learned this the hard way and had some gritty soup the first time. I have found I get enough flavor if I just drop it in as is. Cover and cook on high. When it boils, drop the heat down so that it’s still very hot but not at a full-on boil.

Rice Noodles:

I like to cook these while the broth is heating. I use the flat, fat ones that look like fettuccini. You can find them in Asian grocery stores, or if you are super lucky your local store has them. I have also used ramen noodles when desperate but this is NOT ideal. The directions on the package for the noodles are pretty simple. When finished, just strain out the water and let sit.

Garnishes:

Chop up a bunch of fresh cilantro. Mint and Asian basil are common pho garnishes, but I can never get them at my grocery store so it’s cilantro for me. Next chop some green onions. Red onions also work well, but be sure to slice thinly if you use these. Quarter a lime and then set all this aside. If you can get fresh bean sprouts (rare for me) I suggest washing/rinsing a pile and placing them on a plate with the limes.

Meat:

Once the veggies are done it’s time to slice the meat. The goal is to slice it as thinly as possible so that it cooks in the broth upon first contact. Due to the high protein content, venison is most tender when it’s cooked hot and fast, which is one of the reasons I really like it in pho. How thin is thin? Paper is ideal but nothing over 1/16 of an inch.

Plating:

This recipe makes two large bowls (think medium-size mixing bowls) or four appetizer-size servings. Divide rice noodles and place at the bottom of each bowl. Next in the bowls, distribute the cilantro and onions. The meat goes on top of all this. I like to spread the meat out so that it all cooks evenly and instantly upon contact with the broth. Finally take a soup ladle and add very hot broth (key word: VERY) to each bowl. Fill with enough broth to cover the meat to fully cook it.

Personalizing your pho:

Bean sprouts, limes to fresh squeeze and additional herbs like mint and Asian basil are common add-ins. Putting these on a plate in the middle of the table allows everyone to make a bowl of pho just the way they like it. Oh, and don’t forget the Sriracha!

Enjoy!

In the fast-paced blur of action shooting competitions, it’s sometimes difficult to figure out what’s really going on, or how it all works. Perhaps if a national and world champion shooter broke down the events in short, easy-to-understand segments, you might not only get it, you’d want to go shoot at competitive events yourself! Winning big in Vegas

January 31, 2010 by

Last week was an exciting time for the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the firearms industry. I have been fortunate enough to attend a number of Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trades Shows (SHOT Show) over the years. Not only was this year’s show packed, but I was particularly excited to see more products designed for women on the show floor than ever.

I also attended my first WOMA networking event.  What a wonderful opportunity to meet members of WOMA and talk about generating exposure for women in the outdoor industry! It was such a pleasure to meet and reconnect with some of the people who have pioneered the way into a traditionally male industry. Though not a huge gathering in number, the event hosted a talented and diverse spectrum of participants dedicated to the goals of The WOMA.

For those who didn’t have the opportunity to attend, Kim Pezzeminti of Doeville.com graciously donated several beautiful door prizes at the event. One of these prizes was a beautiful, bronze and peach, freshwater pearl and antler shed necklace with matching earrings. I admit to fully thinking, “Ooh, pick me!” for the drawing and it must have paid off.  I was a very lucky winner, not only for the beautiful jewelry, but for the opportunity to meet others dedicated to promoting women in the outdoor industry.

Top female shooters collaborate to create online resource for women in practical shooting

September 10, 2009 by

GLASGOW, MONTANA (September 9, 2009) – Champion action shooters Sharyn Cohen, Julie Golob and Kippi Leatham are pleased to announce the launch of Women of USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association), an online resource for women in practical shooting. Creating a home page at WomenofUSPSA.com, Women of USPSA updates can also be found on Facebook, Twitter, Ustream.TV and on the WomenofUSPSA.com Blog.

Women of USPSA’s mission is to encourage and inspire women everywhere to participate in the shooting sports by celebrating the women who compete in USPSA competitions. The main site debut features biographies of many of the women competing at this year’s USPSA Handgun National Championships in Las Vegas, NV. Live streaming video of the women’s race for the national title can be viewed directly through the “Watch LIVE” link on WomenofUSPSA.com.

julie_goloski_thumb“USPSA has been an online leader within the action shooting sports through their recognition of the female segment at USPSA.com’s Ladies Zone. To supplement their efforts to recruit more women into the sport, Kippi Leatham and I developed the concept of WomenofUSPSA.com some time ago. Wanting to breathe life into the idea before this year’s Handgun Nationals, we then recruited Sharyn Cohen for her technical talents to develop a web presence. Our goal is to celebrate the women who compete in the sport and showcase their shooting accomplishments at every level,” said Women of USPSA co-founder, Julie Golob.

Kippi Leatham added, “I was excited at the opportunity to promote the women who work very hard, both on and off the range. Most of us have full-time jobs, families, children and other hobbies that we enjoy. I hope that by uniting as a group, sharing our personal thoughts and stories, we can excite women, gun-owners and otherwise, to get out and shoot! As a pure voluntary effort, the response has been overwhelming in such a short time. I can’t wait to expand upon our celebration of the Women of USPSA, and I hope that our sister-shooters will catch the fever and want to pitch in.”

Through unique live coverage of the USPSA Handgun Nationals, Women of USPSA will feature the top women in the sport. Real time interviews and updates on Twitter and Facebook will provide fans the opportunity to follow their favorite female shooters. Women of USPSA’s future plans include growing the online presence by highlighting past and present lady champions within the sport.

Team Smith & Wesson women led by Golob deliver positive results during summer matches

August 5, 2009 by

Smith & Wesson Corp., announced that Team Smith & Wesson Captain Julie Golob and fellow women teammates Carrie Jamrogowicz and Laura Torres-Reyes delivered excellent performances in women’s divisions during four summer matches – the United States Shooting Academy (USSA) Pro Am, United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Area 1 Championships, the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) Texas Multi-Club Regional and at the USPSA Virginia/Maryland Sectional.

Julie Goloski - Member of The WOMA

Julie Goloski - Member of The WOMA and captain of the women's Team Smith & Wesson.

Held at the United States Shooting Academy in Tulsa, OK, the USSA Pro Am is designed to test all aspects of practical shooting. Competing with a Smith & Wesson M&P Pro Series 9mm pistol, Golob placed 2nd in both the Open and Limited Divisions. An all steel target event, the Pro Am featured eight diverse stages of fire with par times set for each stage and the total number of steel targets down representing each competitor’s final score. Fresh off her victory as the Open Ladies Title winner at the International Revolver Championship (IRC) just days before, Golob maintained her competitive prowess using her stock M&P9 Pro Series in both divisions in the match, placing 2nd in each.

“This was my first Pro Am and it was a lot of fun,” said Golob. “Instead of shooting for time and points like many other action shooting events, competitors literally raced against the clock to knock down as many steel targets as possible. It was also my first match with an M&P9 Pro Series. Coming right off the IRC where I used my Model 627 to the Pro Am with the M&P, I definitely had to shift gears. I am very pleased with my performance at a new event with a new firearm and I look forward to coming back next year.”

In her first major tournament as a member of Team Smith & Wesson, Carrie Jamrogowicz took home the High Lady award at the USPSA Area 1 Championships in Parma, Idaho. Competing with a Smith & Wesson M&P Pro Series 9mm pistol, Jamrogowicz outscored six other female competitors en route to her prestigious title.

“The USPSA Idaho Selection did a fantastic job of putting this match together,” said Jamrogowicz. “I am extremely pleased with my performance at my first major match representing Smith & Wesson and it has given me great confidence for my upcoming matches.”

Also debuting for Team Smith & Wesson this year was Laura Torres-Reyes, who earned titles in both USPSA and IDPA competitions. Demonstrating her versatility in the different shooting sports, Torres-Reyes took home the High Lady award at the Texas Multi-Club IDPA Regional held in San Antonio, Texas, besting a field of six women. She followed the victory with another win in the Production Division at the USPSA Virginia/Maryland Sectional match in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Torres-Reyes expertly used the M&P9 Pro Series pistol to secure her championship titles.

“I am extremely proud of how our talented team of female competitors has performed in the many different action shooting sports this season,” said Smith & Wesson Team Captain Julie Golob. “At each match, these ladies have fully demonstrated their diverse skills while acting as great ambassadors to both the sport and to Smith & Wesson. Smith & Wesson has truly put together a well-rounded team of female shooters, each bringing a great skill set and a warm personality to the world of competitive shooting.”
