Nancy Jo completes Grand Slam, starts on another one!

Sunday, Apr. 18, 2010, was a very exciting day for Richard and me —I achieved my Turkey Grand Slam harvesting my Merriam’s in central Montana. This, by far, was one of our most challenging hunts — both mentally and physically due to lost luggage upon our arrival, two to five foot of fresh snow on the ground, a flat tire on our rental vehicle and a whole plethora of other shenanigans and calamity that continually happened—but worth every minute of it. Our original return flight was changed so we didn’t arrive at our home until well after midnight.  The story is at my blog here.

I harvested my Merriam’s at 7 a.m. MDT on March 18, 2010, in the mountains of Central Montana. The bird had a 9” beard, 1/2 “ rounded spurs and weighed in at 23 pounds. It is typical for birds in this region to have broken or worn-down spurs from the freezing temps and rocky terrain. I can TOTALLY relate to that because I wore quite a bit of sole off my own boots.

I am headed to Florida this week and then Oklahoma next week … my original goal was to complete my Grand Slam in one year which by calendar date I succeeded, but for last season my Merriam’s carried over. I still have the opportunity to complete a Grand Slam in the same season if I can be successful in harvesting my Osceola in Florida and my Rio in Oklahoma—so my goal is still in reach!!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone that supported me, cheered me on, wished me luck, or sent me in the field with their products; you made this special. Good luck to each and every one of you this season and please keep me updated with your success or stories. ~ Nancy Jo Adams

Team Artemis readies for upcoming Campbell Outdoor Challenge in Illinois

October 19, 2009 by Amy Shaw

Team Artemis, the all woman team comprised of Nancy Jo Adams and Marti Davis, are excited about the opportunity to try their skills in the Whitetail qualifying challenge at Campbell’s Illinois Whitetails in Carmi, Illinois, on October 24 through 30. The team is proudly sponsored by Bass Pro Shops/RedHead, Women’s Outdoor News, Up North Journal and several various gear sponsors. This is an exciting opportunity that will give them experience of filming hunts for broadcast quality footage.

The Campbell Outdoor Challenge gives teams comprised of a hunter and a camera person the opportunity to compete against other teams proving their ability to capture the hunt and harvest on camera effectively. Campbell Cameras specializes in equipping outdoor enthusiasts with the proper video and audio equipment to capture the thrill of the hunt and offers video cameras and accessories, audio equipment, camera mount systems, video lights and editing software to make the perfect combination to fit any camera person’s needs.

newnancyjoFor Nancy Jo, this opportunity could not have presented itself at a better time. Nancy Jo was recently announced as the First Lady of Up North Journal. As field staff, Nancy Jo will be filming her hunts for the 2009-2010 season for UNJ’s Beyond the Wild and was researching cameras and equipment for that need. Up North Journal offers weekly podcasts and you will be able to listen to updates while Team Artemis is attending this challenge. You can find Nancy Jo’s blog link on the site and can read about the Team Artemis Campbell Outdoor Challenge experience as it unfolds.

Nancy Jo expressed that she likes the idea that Campbell Cameras can be a one-stop-shop to purchase everything that is necessary to film hunts in the field. She stated, “The Outdoor Filming Packages are perfect for someone like me who is new to the sport of filming hunts. I don’t have to worry about getting a camera and equipment that is virtually of no use to me as I would if buying at a big electronic store retailer. I can rest assured that Campbell Cameras is outfitting me with all the necessary items that I need for my intended purpose. ”

martidavistnMarti Davis, RedHead Pro Field Staff member, is a very integral part of Team Artemis — bringing her experience of filming hunts in the past and her successful harvest record to the team. Marti stated, “Filming a hunt is something I have tried before with low-end equipment and low-end results. I look forward to filming Nancy Jo with Campbell Cameras’ broadcast quality equipment and getting some high-quality results.”

Nancy Jo Adams – Member of The WOMA

September 8, 2009 by The WOMA

Nancy_Jo_FeaturedNancy Jo is a freelance writer, a staff writer for Woman Hunter magazine and the Guru Huntress columnist for The Women’s Outdoor News. She is an avid huntress who enjoys hunting both small and large game and has successfully taken her quarry with rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun and compound bow. She also enjoys sporting clays and shoots in 3-D competitions. Turkey hunting remains her favorite, but Nancy Jo concedes that deer hunting runs a close second.

She is an advocate for women hunters and enjoys researching and field testing products that are woman friendly and bringing that information to women hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. Nancy Jo’s work as a NALA-certified paralegal has instilled in her the skills essential to feed her inquisitive nature and research products of interest.

Nancy Jo credits her love for hunting to her husband and mentor, Richard, and believes that, if not for his unselfishness in sharing his love for the sport with her, she would never have had the awe-inspiring opportunity to have hunted in nine states in only three short years of hunting. Although they spend a majority of their hunting time together, Nancy Jo has ventured to other states on her own and feels confident that this was possible because of the skills instilled in her through Richard’s mentoring and the information she has gained through her research.

Adams and Davis to pair up for Campbell Outdoor Challenge

September 8, 2009 by Amy Shaw

newnancyjoI was approached about the idea of attending the hunt in the Campbell Outdoor Challenge, which airs on VERSUS TV,  for a qualifying archery whitetail hunt at Campbell’s Illinois Whitetails in Camri, Ill., on October 24-30, 2009. WOMA member Marti Davis, team camera woman, and I will comprise the two-woman team — one hunter and one camera person — for this week-long hunt. This will be the first all-woman team that has been on the show. Marti will be using the Sony HDR-FX7 camera for filming this hunt.

martidavistnAlthough Marti and I have never personally met, I think we will make the perfect team combination. I have followed along on her turkey hunts for the past two seasons through her stories. You can read about Marti and some of her writings at http://www.womenhunters.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=86:marti-davis-bio&catid=25:ladies&Itemid=113.

We are still working on a team name and sponsors but I purchased my archery whitetail combo tag and license online last weekend. I am looking forward to the challenge and to spending time getting to know Marti on this venture. I hope that my friends from Facebook, Talkhunting, Woman Hunter, Women Hunters, Up North Journal, Bowcast and personal friends and hunting buddies will follow along on this blog. There is a lot to be done prior to our departure on October 23, but I am excited about the opportunity. I hope you check back periodically for the updates as I plan to bring an account of the entire experience to the readers of this blog. As I always say — even the good, the bad, the ugly and the comical.
