Supporting our Second Amendment right to bear arms

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
—Second Amendment, adopted Dec. 15, 1791
Until I met my husband 19 years ago, I had given little thought to what our Constitution is—much less our Second Amendment rights. My husband, the political animal that he is, soon educated me about our precious Constitution and how our right to keep and bear arms (though guaranteed in the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights) is constantly under threat. He helped me understand that the one group that works constantly to preserve our Second Amendment right to carry firearms is the National Rifle Association (NRA). My husband and I are now proud Lifetime members of the NRA and have joined NRA’s Ring of Freedom.

The 2010 SHOT Show afforded me many opportunities: time with some of my favorite gal pals, vacation time with hubby Brian, and a chance to experience some of the newest and most technologically advanced products offered by today’s firearms industry. At the 2010 Bass Pro’s Media Day at the Range, I was the lucky winner of PyramidAir’s generous donation of an Evanix AR6 Huntmaster, a beautiful walnut stock, 5-shot .22 caliber air rifle.
All-ladies Colorado elk hunt in November
Join a group of enthusiastic huntresses (including members of The WOMA) this November for an all-ladies guided elk hunt in the Colorado Rockies to benefit the NRA and the NRA Foundation.
The elk hunt will take place Friday, November 5 through Thursday, November 11, 2010, at the spectacular Bear Mountain Ranch, near Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This 10,000-acre ranch offers some of the best elk hunting in the West.
The cost of $5,250 includes:
Elegant lodging, with full amenities and breathtaking views overlooking the Continental Divide.
One professional guide assigned to two women hunters.
Gourmet meals, including wine and spirits if desired.
Field dressing and transportation to the meat processor.
Great camaraderie and warm hospitality in a spectacular setting.
A few places are still available for this fabulous elk hunt. For more information, please contact Heide Kaser at the NRA Office of Advancement at 703-267-1622 or 703-625-3005 (cell), or e-mail Heide at HKaser@nrahq.org.

Heartbeat of The WOMA: Twin Biathletes, WOMA retreat & more

A few weeks ago several members of the Women’s Outdoor Media Association attended the annual NRA Meetings and Exhibits in Charlotte, N.C. It was an AWESOME experience, between outstanding speakers, a record-breaking number of exhibitors and attendees, plus a wonderful response to The WOMA’s hospitality suite hosted throughout the Saturday of the convention.
In a few weeks, my video editing guru, Marilyn Vogel of ProVideos 4 U, will have finished a webisode filmed at the NRA event. We’ll post the video at the website so you’ll have the opportunity to meet a variety of interesting new WOMA members, including Olympic Biathlon twin sisters, Tracy and Lanny Barnes.
The Barnes sisters, along with several other men and women of all ages and media backgrounds, are exactly the “breaths of fresh air” that our outdoor industry needs, especially if we hope to continue to encourage mainstream media to cover our industry in a pro-gun way—and we do!
As the camp director of Babes with Bullets ™, I know that at almost every BWB camp across the US we enjoy pro-gun mainstream media coverage (check out the newest pieces from NBC and ABC at the Babes With Bullets website. Whether at Babes with Bullets ™ or other arenas of The WOMA based on hunting, fishing, the shooting sports and archery, the goal of The WOMA is to build a unique human interest story about and around women, not a story about political parties or turf wars.
The saga of Tracy and Lanny, from their World Cup wins, to their experiences at the 2010 Winter Olympics, and now their goal of the 2014 Winter Olympics, is just one of many intriguing storylines. Visit Tracy and Lanny’s website at www.TwinBiathletes.com.
The gals are actively building their sponsorship and fan base, and I believe The WOMA is the perfect vehicle to help them with that task! WOMA President Barb Baird and I are already talking about traveling to Russia for the 2014 Olympics so we can cheer on our fellow WOMA members in their quest for an Olympic medal, so stay tuned for more information as time goes on.

Katherine Browne, fly fishing guide in Colorado and WOMA member, has offered to guide fly fishers this October at the first WOMA retreat.
We’re also hoping that Tracy and Lanny can make it to the first WOMA retreat to be held at Gunnison, Colo., from Friday, October 8 to Tuesday, October 12. This retreat, with housing provided at Three Rivers Resort, is being arranged through another outstanding member, Katherine Browne, of the Prois Pro Hunting Staff. Katherine has put together for us a wonderful (and significantly discounted) package including grouse hunting, fly fishing and something I’ve wanted to do for years: working and hunting with falcons. How cool is that!
We have a large lodge reserved and can accommodate a total of 12 people for this event, though several spots were already spoken for as soon as we announced the retreat. So far we have three couples and two other members. If you’re interested, please contact me by e-mail (Deb@theWOMA.com) ASAP, as it takes a deposit of $100 per person to hold your spot. We estimate the cost for lodging, chipping in for food, a one-day grouse hunting license, a full day of fly fishing, etc. will run roughly $450 per person for the whole event. This is a great program offered at a discount for The WOMA, though due to lack of slots we are limiting this event to adults only.
I hope to meet more of you at the October retreat and in the meantime please submit your articles, photos, short blogs (whatever) to The WOMA so we can see what you are doing in your outdoor life!
NRA Convention – Charlotte, NC
Life doesn’t get better than this. We began the day with a wine tasting at the Childress Vineyards, and yes there are pictures. Click here to view them all. And I even got a picture with the owner and NASCAR star Richard Childress.
I am very excited about our WOMA lounge on Saturday, May 15 at the Queens Room at The Westin in Charlotte from 7 – 2. If you are in the area, please join us. What fun!

Starbucks and guns

As I was reading my e-mails today, I happened across one from the NRA with a “vote now” window, asking me if I would be patronizing Starbucks more because of the anti-gun boycott of said coffee beanery.
What? Starbucks was being boycotted? This I had to see for myself. After a bit of research, I came across this page on Free Republic, which is brief but makes for an interesting read. The readers’ comments, however, had me laughing out loud. Read more
NRA Women’s Leadership Forum inaugural Phoenix event
My husband, Al, first taught me about the importance of the National Rifle Association and how they have sustained our Second Amendment right to bear arms. I am thrilled to be working with NRA’s Women’s Leadership Forum and especially excited that Al and I were able to host the first event in Phoenix. Judi White from Tucson spearheaded this group. When asked about bringing it to Phoenix, of course I was on board.
The NRA Women’s Leadership Forum unites women of influence to defend our Second Amendment freedoms and help secure the future of the NRA through philanthropic leadership.
We are working to get the message out to women that their membership in the NRA Women’s Leadership Forum is vital in order for the NRA to continue to defend the Constitution, offer programs to women and young people, and fight to protect our rights to lawfully own firearms. Women are particularly interested in the ability to protect themselves and their families in their homes, and don’t believe the government should take away their right to do so.
Membership in the Forum starts at $1,000 a year, and members receive invitations to special events around the country throughout the year, and at the Annual Meeting. Women have the opportunity to have a voice in the organization through their membership in the Women’s Leadership Forum and bring to the forefront issues of importance to them.
Whether women want to own a firearm or not, the NRA is for them—we teach safety to children at all ages, including our Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program, which teaches young children to “Stop, Don’t Touch, Leave the Area, and Tell an Adult” if they find a firearm, and we offer our Refuse to be a Victim course, which gives women a plan for personal protection and crime prevention.
Please go to Facebook to view more photos of this groundbreaking event.
I hope you will join us at the NRA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina! And if you have any questions, please let me know. Marsha@MarshaPetrieSue.com
Bring it On!

Bring it on … that’s the campaign slogan for Republican gubernatorial candidate Karen Handel. And she means it! I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Handel when Senior Partner Sonny Morris, of Morris, Manning & Martin, brought her around to meet each and every employee at our firm. Now I’m not very politically savvy. In fact, until I started shooting with my husband two years ago, I didn’t even know which amendment protected my right to bear arms! But I seized the opportunity to ask Ms. Handel about her political platform, and she responded quite positively. I explained my interest in Second Amendment rights due to competitive shooting, the fact that I’m a certified NRA instructor, my scheduled Refuse to be a Victim® Instructor’s Course at the NRA Annual Meeting and Convention, and my membership with The Women’s Outdoor Media Association. Ms. Handel assured me that she is for Second Amendment rights and has “no intentions of touching them.” She also applauded us, as WOMA members, for our efforts in promoting women in outdoor sports. I like her already! While I believe she’ll have a tough battle in getting Georgia where it needs to be fiscally, I’m glad she comes to the table with the kind of attitude we all like to see — the kind that says “Bring It On!”
You can find out more about Ms. Handel at www.KarenHandel.com.
