Winning big in Vegas
Last week was an exciting time for the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the firearms industry. I have been fortunate enough to attend a number of Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trades Shows (SHOT Show) over the years. Not only was this year’s show packed, but I was particularly excited to see more products designed for women on the show floor than ever.
I also attended my first WOMA networking event.
What a wonderful opportunity to meet members of WOMA and talk about generating exposure for women in the outdoor industry! It was such a pleasure to meet and reconnect with some of the people who have pioneered the way into a traditionally male industry. Though not a huge gathering in number, the event hosted a talented and diverse spectrum of participants dedicated to the goals of The WOMA.
For those who didn’t have the opportunity to attend, Kim Pezzeminti of Doeville.com graciously donated several beautiful door prizes at the event. One of these prizes was a beautiful, bronze and peach, freshwater pearl and antler shed necklace with matching earrings. I admit to fully thinking, “Ooh, pick me!” for the drawing and it must have paid off. I was a very lucky winner, not only for the beautiful jewelry, but for the opportunity to meet others dedicated to promoting women in the outdoor industry.

Have you ever gone to a trade show where you saw all this neat stuff, and picked up a bag full of brochures and pamphlets on everything you saw–only to find, when you get back and start going through it, that you can’t remember who had what? Do you feel overwhelmed or lost that you can’t be sure who you spoke to, who you gave information to or, even worse, who you ordered from and how much money you spent? Read more
Women’s Outdoor Media Association Launches at SHOT Show 2009
A new paradigm in outdoor communications, thewoma.com offers networking and mentoring to outdoor communicators
Orlando, Fla., Jan. 17 – The Women’s Outdoor Media Association, thewoma.com, launched to an enthusiastic group of outdoor communicators and professionals on Sat., Jan. 17, at the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trades Show. Attendees met four of the five board members, asked questions and learned about the framework of the organization.
Thewoma.com is an association geared for people who work or volunteer to communicate with (and about) women in the outdoor fields of shooting sports and/or hunting and fishing traditions. Its intention is to enhance other media organizations. The difference is that the focus of thewoma.com is on what women are doing and what is being done for them in the outdoor areas of shooting sports, hunting and fishing.
Traditional fields of media and non-traditional media fields (i.e. Internet based) will be considered for membership. Additionally, women and men who have attained professional status in outdoor venues such as shooting sports, hunting or fishing competitions also will be considered for membership.
Chairman Deb Ferns, in her welcoming address, said, “The WOMA mission is about networking, mentoring and communicating in a way that enables us to reach more people in both our own industry and mainstream media with a good story about women. It is becoming imperative that turf wars within our industry be set aside by accelerating ways of being able to work together. The huge demographic of women who might, just might, show an interest in joining us in our passion for the outdoors supercedes everything else.”
Thewoma.com’s board is made of Ferns (Tucson, Ariz.), Pres. Barbara Baird (Rolla, Mo.), Vice-president Kirstie Pike (Gunnison, Colo.), Sec./Treasurer Cindy Noyes (Atlanta, Ga.) and Board Member Marsha Petrie Sue (Scottsdale, Ariz.).
