On the Road in Rhodes Greece – IPSC World Shoot XVI

Here’s an update from WOMA member Kay Miculek on her arrival in Rhodes, Greece. Kay and fellow WOMA members Lisa Munson and Athena Lee are part of the United States Women’s Team competing in the championship:
We made it to Rhodes without too much trouble. Getting the guns through the Athens airport was a hassle, but compared to the travel problems other US shooters had (and are still having), we made it fine.
Our one full day in Athens was just right. The Acropolis was amazing, but packed with tourists. It would have been great if all those people would go home! We’re now in our villa on Rhodes, it’s great. We are well outside of the tourist areas and this place is just what I had in mind when I think of Greece. The home owner told us about a couple of really neat family run restaurants that the locals patronize. These places are located in these very narrow “streets” and don’t start serving until 7:30 pm. They put tables and chairs up right in the street. You often have people walking by, and there’s the occasional scooter passing by the table. We haven’t had a meal yet where we didn’t have a cat watching and waiting for a handout. (The cats are very well behaved. They just sit and wait patiently.)
The Opening Ceremonies are tonight. Looks like it’s going to be a very big event. The Phil Harmonic Orchestra will be performing! Nothing says “Greek” like the Phil Harmonic Orchestra!? The only problem is, I don’t think any Greeks own watches. The match booklet says the Opening Ceremony starts at 16:00 hr, but then we were told it will be more like 18:00 hr.. If you ask any of the match officials, they say it will be between 16:00 hr and 18:00 hr, probably. I guess we’ll split the difference and show up around 17:00 hr..
Everyone shoots for five days and has one day off. Athena and I have tomorrow, the first day of the match, off. I was pretty bummed about that because I’m ready to shoot something! But this morning I managed to book a dive for Lena and I tomorrow. That should be a highlight of the trip.
Guess that’s it for now. I’ll let you gals know how the shooting goes in a couple of days.
WOMA Members Attend Babes With Bullets Camp

Being a part of the WOMA is such a fantastic thing. We are offered, and we share, so many opportunities through this organization. Last fall I attended the annual WOMA retreat in Gunnison, Colorado. It was a pleasure to meet some of my outstanding colleagues that make the WOMA happen. I was invited to sign up for a shooting camp while I was at that retreat. The camp is called Babes with Bullets and the director is the WOMA’s very own Deb Ferns. I enjoy shooting very much and had been wanting to work on my pistol shooting so I was interested right away. I signed up for the pistol camp which was to be held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I anxiously awaited spring time and camp. It would be my chance to practice with my pistol as well as meet up with more WOMA members and also make new friends who may share the vision of the WOMA.
We received our camp updates from Kay Miculek. She is head instructor at Babes with Bullets, as well as multi-time National and World Champion. Our latest update informed us that May is spring time in many parts of the country, but in Steamboat Springs,Colorado, the snow was still coming. She was in touch with us with last minute reminders, preparations and housing information. We were unable to get to Bear Mountain Ranch, where we were supposed to be staying, so Kay sent info with a new location to be called home for three days. We made our trek to camp and I joined up with fellow WOMA members, Marsha Petrie Sue, Chris Quam, Lanny Barnes, Tracy Barnes, Anne Draper and Deb Ferns.
Due to the weather, the Babes with Bullets crew had to do a lot of improvising and they didn’t miss a step. They made camp happen without a glitch and teh 20 ladies, including our WOMA members, were able to relax, have fun, and most importantly, learn a lot in just a few days. We did quite a few dry fire drills with our pistols, learning to safely quick draw, raise, steady and shoot our pistols and then finally learning to shoot and reload while on the move. It was so amazing to see ladies who had never touched a pistol quickly maneuver and shoot the various stages at the camp.
Despite the snow, rain, sleet and hail, the camp was outstanding and I would recommend it to any lady whether they are long time shooters or have never touched a firearm. The instructors are athletes who hold multiple National and World titles and, despite their grandiose achievements, are very professional as well as extremely friendly. The ladies at Babes with Bullets were fabulous. We learned a lot and met and made new friends. Thank you to the WOMA for giving us the opportunity to meet such outstanding women.

Though Debbie’s early years began in Southern California with pretty dresses and a little purple bicycle, don’t let her dainty stature fool you into thinking she is a prissy little thing. Besides the flowered basket on that bicycle, she also had a fierce firearm. You know, one that shot the cork out the end tied to a string! And a Daisy BB gun. Ok, fierce for a nine-year-old girl!

Julie Goloski Golob wins Single Stack Ladies title
Champion competition handgun shooter and WOMA member Julie Goloski Golob has won . . . again.
Julie took the Women’s Single Stack division title at the USPSA Area 6 Championships, held April 16-18 in Conyers, Georgia. USPSA Area 6 was the first match in her busy 2010 competition season. “Montana’s News Station” KTVQ ran a feature story on Julie’s win this week. She lives in Glasgow, Montana, with her husband and their young daughter.
She will travel to Barry, Illinois, this weekend to compete in her second 2010 season match, the USPSA Single Stack Nationals, held from April 30 to May 2.
A competition handgunner since age 14, Julie was a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit for eight years, and was named U.S. Army Female Athlete of the Year in 1999. She has won more than 70 titles in national and international shooting competitions.
Julie also serves as team captain for the Smith & Wesson pro staff.
Women making a mark at USPSA Area 6

The United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) divides the nation into eight different areas and each area hosts its own championship. These action-packed competitions are the sport’s premiere matches. Many draw from more than just their resident competitors. Area 6, the Southeast region, is one of these area championships. Hosted by the South River Gun Club, the competition has always been among the best. Honestly, this match could be a national level championship. There are certainly enough competitors. A whopping 380+ shot the match this year!
There are some matches where you see just a handful of women on the range. Not the case with Area 6! At the helm, a woman who wears so many hats, The WOMA’s Cindy Noyes, was once again the match director. There were women working at every level, from Chief Range Officer Beth Wingfield and 15 lady range officers (including The WOMA’s own Melita Sims Ellington) to seven women serving roles in Stats and Registration.
Thank you, ladies, for all your hard work!
Women represented every level of competition, from national champion shooters to junior ladies just making their marks in USPSA. While competing on Friday, I had a chance to catch up with Kay Miculek and Lisa Munson, who were fresh off teaching yet another successful Babes With Bullets (TM) Ladies Action Shooting Camp. I also got to meet Katie Harris and Tierani Hendrix, two talented young ladies competing in Production Division. I just love seeing all the junior females participating in the sport!
Here’s a video from the 2010 USPSA Area 6 match demonstrating the wide variety of stages that were both challenging and a blast to shoot.
There’s no doubt that Area 6 is a match you don’t want to miss on the circuit. It’s a huge success on so many levels. The match has excellent leadership, and the dedication from the hardworking women who serve on the staff is impressive. Pair that with the wonderful and diverse group of women who compete, and Area 6 is one competition where women truly make a mark.

The future of women’s shooting sports

“Are you here to shoot or to watch?” That was my question to eight-year-old Hailey Proffitt at Sunday’s USPSA pistol match at East Alabama Gun Club in Phenix City, Alabama.
“I’m here to watch,” Hailey replied. But it wasn’t long before she had a string of pasters ready to paste targets as soon as the range officer called the range clear. Of course, that was after donning her Howard Leight ear and eye protection. Hailey has her own gear. Wow!
Dad Jason told me he can’t go to the range without her. “I let her shoot my 9 mm, but it’s just too much for her,” Jason said when I asked if he had considered letting her compete as a junior shooter. Mark Kauder, EAGC’s range manager, informed us that they permit .22s on the range–just perfect for junior shooters and would-be shooters like Hailey.
With the speed of youth and intensity of a young woman on a mission, Hailey pasted targets at each stage, making our downtime between shooters minimal. Unlike many kids her age, Hailey wasn’t content to wander off to explore, or sit in the shade to play an electronic game. No, ma’am . . . she was all business, thank you.
Hailey is also a super helper when dad Jason reloads for his matches. She will separate the brass after cleaning and have it ready to be resized and loaded up. She knows every component of ammunition reloading.
Hailey says, “Dad teaches me safety first. I don’t do anything unless he is with me, or I ask.”
As for the future of women’s shooting sports, Hailey is it, along with all the other young girls just like her. It’s up to us (parents, mentors, friends, media, manufacturers and industry associations) to help out in any way we can to promote their development and elevate their interest.
And I want Hailey on my squad. I say get that little gal a .22 pistol, and let’s get her shooting some pistol matches. I certainly hope that the next time I shoot a match at EAGC, I get to shoot on Hailey’s squad, er, I mean Hailey’s dad’s squad.

Julie began her shooting career with her father, Pete Goloski, at the young age of 14. What began as a father/daughter weekend hobby turned into an accomplished shooting career, and now she is a contender at every level. Julie’s talent was realized in 1995 when the US Army recruited her to shoot for the Army Action Shooting Team. It wasn’t long before she became an unbeatable force as the 1999 USPSA Limited (iron sight) and Open (race gun) Ladies Champion and Ladies World Speed Shooting Champion, unprecedented for a lady shooter in the same year. Recognizing her accomplishments, the Army named her US Army Female Athlete of the Year in 1999, a prestigious honor that had never been bestowed on an action shooter before. After serving nearly eight years with the Army, Julie continues to strive to be the best. She dominates in stock gun competition and has become the first and only Five Division USPSA Ladies National Champion. In the 2006 competition season, Julie made another first – winning the Ladies National Title for the USPSA Limited-10, Single-Stack and Production Nationals and became the first woman to ever earn a USPSA Nationals Triple Crown. In February of 2008, Julie gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and now adds wife and mother to her many titles. Always pushing the competition envelope, and as a member of Team Smith & Wesson, she hopes to continue to raise the level of her shooting higher and higher. Julie’s blog keeps fans of action shooting updated at her website www.juliegoloski.com.
